An internal gutter is a leak waiting for a date
An internal gutter, sometimes called a concealed or box gutter, runs the water channel inside the roof line rather than hanging off the edge of it. Architects like them because they hide the spouting and give a house a crisp, flat eave. They have been specified on New Zealand homes for decades, and they are still being built today.
The difficulty is what happens when one stops working. An external gutter that blocks or rusts fails in the open: water runs over the front lip, splashes on the path, and somebody notices. An internal gutter has nowhere to spill except inward. Overflow goes into the soffit cavity, down the wall framing and out through the ceiling, and it does that silently for years before anyone connects the stain on the bedroom wall to the roof.
Three things drive the failures we see. Debris is the first: internal gutters are awkward to reach, so they rarely get cleared, and the outlets choke. Corrosion is the second: steel that sits under wet leaf litter rusts from the inside out, so by the time a brown spot appears on the painted fascia the damage is well advanced. Capacity is the third: a gutter that copes fine with steady rain can be overwhelmed in the first heavy downpour of the season, and it only takes one.
None of that is a maintenance failure on the owner's part. It is a design that puts a water channel inside a building, and the only permanent answer is to take the water back outside.

RIGS came out of seven years of development by two working fascia and spouting companies who were tired of telling homeowners that fixing an internal gutter properly meant reroofing. It is manufactured in New Zealand from COLORSTEEL, the patent is pending, and it comes in three sizes so it can be matched to the roof it is going on.

What is the RIGS system?
RIGS stands for Revamp Internal Gutter System. It is a New Zealand developed, patent pending fascia and gutter system made from COLORSTEEL, designed specifically to convert failing internal (concealed) gutters to an external system. It also covers or replaces most metal fascia systems fitted in New Zealand over the past 45 years. Quality Roofing is the authorised RIGS installer for the South Island.
How long does an internal gutter conversion take?
Most homes take two to five days on site, depending on the size of the house, the number of corners and how easy the roofline is to reach. There is no roof lifting and no reroof, so your house stays weathertight throughout and you are not living around scaffolding for weeks.
Do you have to lift or replace my roof?
No. That is the whole point of the system. RIGS is engineered to fit to the existing roofline, achieving proper roof overhang without extension flashings, so the roof itself is left alone. Converting internal gutters the old way often meant reroofing the affected sections, which is why so many owners put it off.
How do I know if my internal gutters are failing?
The signs to look for are brown rust spots bleeding through the fascia, black mould on soffit linings, water running down windows or out of internal corners during heavy rain, sagging soffits (especially over corner windows and garage openings), and gutters that stay full of debris. Any one of these means water is already getting somewhere it should not be.
What does it cost to replace internal gutters?
Every roofline is different, so we quote each job individually after a free site visit. The main cost drivers are the linear metres of fascia, the number of corners and stopends, single or double storey access, the number of downpipes, and whether any soffit or framing repair is needed first. There is no charge for the assessment or the quote.
Which colours can I have?
RIGS fascia and spouting come in the COLORSTEEL range, which is the same palette used on New Zealand roofs, so matching an existing roof or picking a deliberate contrast is straightforward. Twenty colours are offered, from Cloud and Titania at the light end through to Ironsand, Lignite and Ebony.
Do you install RIGS outside Christchurch?
Yes. We are the authorised installer for the whole South Island, so we travel for these conversions: Christchurch and Canterbury day to day, and scheduled runs to Ashburton, Kaikōura, Marlborough, the West Coast and Otago. Is there a warranty?
The steel carries the COLORSTEEL warranty, which is the standard New Zealand steel roofing warranty and depends on the environment your house sits in, coastal or inland. We will confirm what applies to your address as part of the quote.
